Vertical Concrete Core Drilling - ABC Concrete Cutting Company

ABC Cutting’s first job, over 40 years ago, involved creating a simple core hole in a wall. Before the invention of the barrel-style core bit, field workers, often apprentices, used a star bit and hammer to manually “jackhammer” a hole. Today, core drill bits range from ½ inch to 60 inches in diameter and are used for plumbing, ductwork, structural, and electrical installations. Materials such as concrete block, concrete, asphalt, brick, and steel can be core-drilled. Concrete core drilling creates circular openings for various applications and is typically performed using a wet process, though dry coring is an option for smaller holes when water cannot be used. Core rigs can be configured for special angles or extreme depths. The process removes only the perimeter of the hole, leaving the inner material, known as the core or slug. Concrete line drilling, though less common due to newer tools like wire saws and diamond chain saws, is effective for removing thick concrete or in tight spaces. This involves drilling overlapping holes around the perimeter of the area to be removed, leaving scalloped edges, which may be acceptable or can be finished by forming and pouring for a clean opening.

Core drilling may seem like a simplistic process and activity, but there are a variety of options to consider, from the type of diamond to the speed of the drill. However, our company has drilled hundreds of thousands of holes in 30-plus years, and we have the knowledge to get your job done quickly. Whether you need one hole or 10,000 holes, give us a call today. When calling for a price, be sure to note the thickness of the material, material type, the diameter of the hole, and the quantity of holes.

Concrete Coring

Typical applications include:

  • Floor drains
  • Sewer drains
  • Sewer tie-ins
  • HVAC openings
  • Phone, electrical, cable, and fiber optic openings
  • Handrail and anchor holes
  • Aggregate analysis
  • Conduit or Pipes
  • Round Vents

Asphalt Coring is specifically used for installing airport runway lights, light pole bases, soil and asphalt sampling, utility locating in conjunction with vacuum excavation, rebuilding catch basins entry points, and rebuilding manhole openings.

Concrete walls and Concrete block walls can be cored utilizing a post. There will be a small anchor installed to hold the drilling post. For block holes, we still have to drill a small hole and use a bolt the goes all the way through the wall to safely hold the drill post. If you have a couple of small holes that cannot have any additional holes created or patched, then it is possible to complete using a hand held core drill.

If you are looking for holes for the purpose of anchoring, please see the anchoring page under specialty services.

Call today for pricing just have the diameter of the hole in inches, depth of hole, material being covered and whether it is a floor or wall.

ABC Cutting’s first job, over 40 years ago, was a simple core hole in a wall. Before the invention of the barrel-style core bit, workers—often apprentices—used a star bit and hammer to manually “jackhammer” a hole. Today, we utilize three sizes of electric drills and two sizes of hydraulic drills to create horizontal holes up to 60 inches in diameter through concrete, block, brick, or combinations of these materials. Depending on size and location, we select the appropriate drill for the job. For conduit or plumbing holes, simply provide the outer diameter, and we will match the size. We carry bits up to 12 inches on our trucks and maintain an extensive assortment of diameters accumulated over four decades. Most walls range from 8 to 18 inches thick, but we frequently handle requests for angled or basin-connected horizontal holes. With adequate space, we can fulfill nearly any requirement, having drilled holes up to 200 feet deep and horizontal runs of at least 12 feet. While vertical drilling is aided by gravity, horizontal drilling is equally achievable with proper planning and tooling.
