Florida Power and Light Smokestack Implosion at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida

ABC Concrete Cutting was contracted by D.H. Griffin Wrecking Company of Greensboro, North Carolina to help prepare four smokestacks for demolition by dynamite at the Florida Power and Light - Port Everglades location in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

The task was to wire saw halfway through the bases of the 341 foot tall smokestacks. There were two stacks with 27 foot diameter bases and 37.5 inch thick walls. One stack had a base of 35 feet in diameter and a wall thickness of 35 inches. The remaining stack had a base of 34 feet in diameter and a wall thickness of 24 inches. Dynamite was placed within the 8 inch diameter holes we core-drilled into these structures.

Each base was cut horizontally to control direction of fall upon detonation.

Project "Plane Ole Cutting"

North American Aerospace Industries is a leading recycler of retired aircraft. Typically, parts are recycled or reused to repair other planes, but this particular plane has a unique destiny—it’s being transformed into a luxurious “glamping” getaway. Wire sawing, a go-to technique for tough cutting jobs, can slice through concrete, steel, aluminum, and other metals with impressive precision. The wire, studded with diamond beads, scrapes along the surface to make the cut, and given the aircraft’s massive size, it was the most practical tool for the task.

Project "Sunken Pier"

A busy oil terminal in the Caribbean faced a major setback when a large pier was hit by a tanker, leaving it badly damaged. Just three months later, things got worse as Hurricane Isaac swept through, sinking the entire pier about six feet underwater, creating financial losses and hazards for passing ships. Bahama Industrial Technologies (BIT) was brought in by Bahamas Oil Refining Company International Limited (BORCO) to serve as the general contractor. BIT then looked for a team with the skills and equipment to handle the tricky underwater cutting and removal of the sunken pier deck, turning to ABC Concrete Cutting for the job.
